For many patients, the most daunting part of a colonoscopy isn't the procedure itself, but the preparation. A clean colon is essential for a successful examination, and while the process requires some temporary changes, modern methods have made it much more tolerable. Here are some tips to help you through it.
Why is it So Important?
Think of the prep as cleaning a window you need to see through clearly. If the colon isn't completely empty, small polyps or other abnormalities can be hidden from view, potentially defeating the purpose of the screening. Completing the prep as instructed is the single most important factor for an accurate and effective colonoscopy.
Tips for Success:
- Plan Ahead: A few days before you start the liquid prep, begin eating a low-fibre diet. Avoid nuts, seeds, whole grains, and raw vegetables. This makes the final clean-out much easier.
- Stay Hydrated: You will be drinking a lot of liquids. Stock up on clear fluids like water, clear broths, light-coloured sports drinks, and apple juice. Avoid red, blue, or purple dyes.
- Chill the Prep Solution: Most prep solutions taste better when they are cold. Keep it refrigerated and consider drinking it through a straw to bypass some of your taste buds.
- Stay Home: Once you begin the prep, you will need to be near a bathroom. Clear your schedule, get some comfortable clothes on, and settle in with a book or a movie.
